Friday 2nd and Saturday 3rd April - john DUMMETT : City Centre Address
john DUMMETT : City Centre Address : 10 places per performance

Contradictory use of public space alters our perceptions of the city and distorts how we associate ourselves within in these spaces. Using the language of public consultation and street protest, City Centre Address re-defines the roles of performer, audience and public on the streets of Leeds.

Performances take place on Friday 2 nd April at 2pm and Saturday 3 rd April at 11am and 2pm, meeting at the [shift] exhibition.

Don't miss this unique opportunity to see Leeds from an entirely new perspective; book ahead at [shift], unit 60-63 Merrion Superstore or by email shift@emerged.net or phone 07751 520 889.

Saturday 3rd April - 12:30pm : camilla BRUETON - Multi Story

Camilla BRUETON 12:30pm : Multi Story

multi story by Camilla BRUETON

Artist camilla BRUETON is organising the 'multi story' classic car meet to celebrate the 40th anniversary year of the first multi storey car park built in Leeds, at the Merrion Centre.

The event will be taking place on the 3rd of April 2004, at 12:30 on the top deck of the Merrion Centre's Car Park. With excellent views of the City, it will be an ideal location to celebrate the love affair with the car which 40 years ago saw Leeds proud of it's first car park in the air.

'multi story' hopes to bring together a wide range of Classic Cars and owners to reflect the past 40 years of motoring in Britain. So far the Leeds Capri Club, Leeds MG Owners Club, Morris Minor Owners Club and the Rover P5 Owners Club have all expressed an interest in participating.

We are looking for individual classic car owners, clubs or businesses who would like to take part. Please contact shift@emerged.net because cars need to be registered before the event.

Many thanks to Q-Parks for their co-operation and support with the organisation of this event.

Saturday 27th March and Saturday 3rd April - Guided walks with gayle CHONG KWAN

gayle CHONG KWAN is intrigued by food and how our sense of taste can recall memories of past places.

Her involvement with the [shift] art project has seen her roaming around the city and literally asking members of the public to map the city of Leeds by its cafés and restaurants.

The maps have been transposed and form part of one gigantic food document that traces the city as a floating island, with fast food restaurants forming its boundaries.

Gayle will use the gathered information on her guided walks around the city, which take place on Saturday 27 th March at 3pm and Saturday 3 rd April at 11am and 3pm.   They start from unit 60-63 in the Merrion Superstore, Merrion Centre, Leeds.   The walks are free and members of the public will be given full opportunity to exchange their food-related anecdotes.   Pop along to the unit to book your ticket in advance to avoid any disappointment.

Thursday 25th March - Independent Art School Seminar 2pm-5pm -[shift] Unit 60-63, Merrion Superstore, Leeds.

As part of [shift] the Independent Art School is organising a seminar that will bring together new critical and cultural perspectives on how people relate to the city, and how artists interact with and express this.

Increasingly artists are using the fabric of the city as their medium. It is becoming an irresistible playground in which to make subtle changes and overt statements that explore the aesthetic and political peculiarities of everyday life.

The artists in [shift] are making works that dissect consumer uses of space, which honour personal histories, and which create surprise interruptions in the daily patterns of the Merrion Superstore and Leeds City Centre.

But what is the history of artists intervening in the city? What are the circumstances that lead to these interventions? Are these works reactions against the increasing control structures we live in? Purely aesthetic attractions to familiar landscapes? Or part of a deeper human mark-making urge to possess ones surroundings?

The Independent Art School is inviting Leeds based researchers in Geography, Sociology and Urban Studies to present their own insights into how people function and use the urban environment, how art can affect the city's ambience, and how the individual and collective can reclaim their locality.

[shift] artists will be present to discuss their work in relation to these issues.

The seminar is free and open to all members of the public.

  Seminar participants:

Sue Ball will discuss the role of the artist as collaborator in Master Planning and Urban Design. Sue Ball/MAAP is a consultancy in Public Arts Development and Strategy. Sue was artistic director of Pavilion, Leeds, 1996-2000 when she initiated projects, which focussed on artist/architectural collaborations in the public realm. Her current projects include the design and build of four micro-architecture 'towers' in Lincolnshire along the river Witham with Gent based architect Robbrechtendaem and a public art strategy for the Wigan Pier Quarter with consortium RKL.

Camilla Brueton will discuss her work on Urban Mapping and her work for [shift], multi story commemorating the 40th anniversary year of the Merrion Superstore car park- (Leeds first multi storey car park).  Camilla is an artist based in London.

Paul Chatterton will give a presentation on three strands of his activity:

-           Research on Young people and City Nightlife

-           His involvement in campaigns about social issues within the city (Leeds ARC)

-           Squatting and fringe cultures within the city (A-Spire).

Paul is a lecturer in Geography at the University of Leeds and a member A-Spire ( www.a-spire.org.uk ) and Leeds ARC ( www.leedsarc.org.uk ).

Gayle Chong Kwan will discuss her research for Sensus which explores how food and associated memories can transport Superstore visitors to other places and times; and a mapping of food memories of the city itself. Gayle studied Politics, Modern History and Communications before doing a Fine Art degree at Central St Martins College of Art.

Lucy Gibson will introduce [shift] and the concepts behind developing this project. Lucy is an artist and initiator/project manager of [shift].

Liz Stirling will give a presentation from her interdisciplinary PhD research on space and ideology. Liz is an artist and lecturer based in Leeds.

Background on The Independent Art School:

The Independent Art School is an artist's artwork and a miniature educational structure/un-structure. The IAS philosophy is process-based, convinced in the ongoing learning process of being an artist. Its main area of exploration is around how the artist exists within the Institution, primarily the University system. To such ends it has set itself up as an autonomous space where artists and thinkers can critically and creatively explore a wide range of issues from diverse viewpoints. Specialisms no longer exist as separate entities, but as ideas that, discussed and explored together can lead to a deeper insight into art practice and society.

The Independent Art School has been setting up meetings for artists since 1999. It functions as an alternative University with no home. Its online journal contains writings from past conferences and events. www.independent-art-school.org.uk.
