[accommodation2] : press release : 14/.08/.03

EmergeD put up for one night only at Edinburgh’s Bruntsfield Youth Hostel.

Between 7 and 12pm the youth hostel will be hosting [accommodation2] the second instalment of EmergeD’s
sight specific exhibition series housed within SYH venues.

[accomodation2] features fifteen artists work designed in response to the context of Bruntsfield Youth Hostel.

[accommodation] was initiated to celebrate the specific and very individual surrounds of one particular Youth
hostel. For many who pass through its doors these details are lost as one hostel simply fades into another.
In the weary eyes of the traveller whose head is only in search of the familiar pillow, the notion of sleep unifies
these uniquely different buildings. Networks of hostels become much like chains of hotels as the traveller feels
the security of familiar surroundings in the budget aesthetic of the hostels bed and breakfast.

Glasgow’s Park Circus Youth Hostel initially bore this desire to identify and work within the surroundings of such
a unique building. Housed within two 19th century town houses, the building is a composite of elements and
histories which the first exhibition sought to uncover. The fragility of these unique characteristics was brought
violently home on February 15th; history took its course and fire ransacked the premises. Another layer in the
history of this unique building it left [accommodation] and many a traveller without a place to stay.

Adaptable to such setbacks, we moved on in search of a friendly inn-keeper to find us a space for the night and so
amending the remit of [accommodation] EmergeD have set up stable in Edinburgh. Many of the individuals involved
in [accomodation2] initially planned to participate in the Glasgow show but have re-thought their ideas in the
context of the new premises. Along the way we have met up with new companions and so our numbers have swelled.
The event true to its name has now become more accommodating and [accommodation] has developed into a more
fluid and evolutionary program.

The guestbook of the show is internationally based, representing artists from Scotland, Ireland and England and
individuals from as far a field as Australia and Canada.

Across the evening [accomodation2] will host a wealth of arts practices and various events will be staged or hung
in the rooms, corridors and enclaves of this vast and ultimately accommodating building.
