no man is an island

Russell presents a new installation developed for the cell spaces of the Old Watch House. The intimacy of a miniature city constructed from of paper and lit with coloured lights illuminates the decayed space of the jail cell as we are left to contemplate the role of the city in ruin throughout history, from Sodom and Gomorrah, to Detroit Michigan.

Architecture stands as a monument to the construction of our spatial environments. However when architecture stands destitute and forlorn we are left to contemplate the fallibility of culture to uphold our hopes and dreams.

Russell is a Melbourne-based artist who, since graduating from RMIT Sculpture department in 2002 has worked across a diverse range of media, including wood, light and video. She has exhibited in both group and solo shows in Melbourne and Sydney and has two works in the 2006 Next Wave Festival.
