You are invited to the launch of Yurta on Saturday 5 August from 5pm – 8pm.
An evening of experimental music in a specially commissioned installation by artist Scott Laverie.

In the event of rain the launch will take place in the Scottish Book Trust itself

Located in the tranquil hidden garden of the Scottish Book Trust Scott Laverie’s Yurta serves as a shrine to the adventure of creativity.

On the one hand it is a tower, a monument associated for thousands of years with settled civilisations. And on the other it appears as a shack-like mobile dwelling, a home for nomads and explorers. It is a playful structure that combines and cannibalises the properties of many architectural genres in the pursuit of a 'triumphant' aesthetic.

Throughout its four-week stay Yurta will play host to a dynamic programme of temporary artworks, performances and music nights. Commissioned artists include Ruth Barker, Craig Coulthard and Chris Walker.

Artists:

IDEAS MOVE AWAY FROM ABSTRACTION is a new public work by Ruth Barker. Standing in the shadow of John Knox and the Scottish Storytelling Centre, this site specific installation will reference the selective breeding of plants to examine the play between rigour and ephemerality within discourse.

Craig Coulthard presents I Love You Means I Hate You, I Love You Means I Love You. A musical performance or a three-way battle of conscience held on Thursday 17 August from 6pm – 8pm. The remains of the conflict will be left to decorate Yurta and the surrounding garden.

Chris Walker’s intervention will take the form of drawings within Yurta in the latter days of its stay in the Scottish Book Trust garden.

Curiosities
An additional series of obscure, experimental objects by artists Stephen Murray, Colin Parker, Chris Walker, Paul Penrice and Juliana Capes will be displayed in the niches of Yurta’s roof.
