Throw
Away - local regeneration
The artist proposes to collect
refuse from streets in a 200 yard radius from the
shop site, and to reuse this to make art pieces/ingenious
objects which draw the looker’s gaze. The objects
are ‘desirable’ in that they are
hand made by an artist, but on closer inspection
the viewer finds that they are a load of old
rubbish, quite literally. These will be attached
to a conveyor belt and a turntable set up to
continually rotate in the shop window.
The piece
keys into several well known visual prompts:
one is reminded of the ‘generation
game’: one of the first of many possession-
grabbing television entertainments. There is
also the obvious reference to a throw away society,
where the pursuit of ever better objects to satisfy
our cravings reaches the level of religious addiction.
And, in the period post G8, we are also reminded
that a large portion of the world’s population
actually lives on and from rubbish; our extraneous
possessions are their livelihood. The secondary
title also keys into the countrywide attempts
at urban renewal where it is believed, whether
correctly or not, that dressing up city centres
and sink estates will ultimately lead to a better
life for local inhabitants
