The use of a shop window
to present an artwork is a curious one. The viewer
is separated from the work by a sheet of glass, in
one instant suggesting the glass that covers a precious
painting or reminding us of our relationship to an
exclusion shop, the unobtainable item placed safely
inside. And yet at the same time the audience stand
on the relatively neutral ground of the pavement,
where an Art Critic is given no privileges over the
Saturday Shopper. We all have a desire for something,
and we all believe this something will lead us to
a better life.
For the site of 52, Bell Street in Glasgow’s
Merchant City I propose to work with our expectations
of an artwork, our desire that it will bring fulfilment,
spiritual awakening or extensive insight. I will
spend the first week making the work in the space,
using materials similar to those I find there.
